Developing A Job Description For A Hospital Chief Medical Officer
This publication provides advice and guidance for the development of a job description for the senior physician executive position in a hospital or a hospital system. We have assumed that the decision to create the position has been made and you are now formalizing the description of what is expected from this physician executive.
Preparation of our sample job description
included the review of many job descriptions used by hospital
organizations throughout the country. Also, the terms chosen
and areas for emphasis reflect the experience our firm has
with physician executive positions. We have seen virtually
all types of these positions and their variations in many
communities. We have included examples of responsibilities
normally found in most hospital CMO job descriptions.
In our opinion the primary value
of CMO job descriptions is that they serve as an opportunity
for all interested parties to agree on the expectations for
the Chief Medical Officer. For a newly established position,
review, negotiation and agreement of the role and responsibilities
by the hospital CEO, the medical staff leadership and the
governing board can occur when the job description is developed.
This document is also of value to the person already serving
in the position as it provides clarity regarding expectations
of others.
Included in the sample job description
is discussion of the key issues related to the position such
as reporting relationships and qualifications. Each issue
is addressed with commentary, opinions and rationale for how
our recommendations were formed. Also, a wide range of duties
has been included to address virtually all areas that may
come under the purview of the Chief Medical Officer.
