Myths and Facts

There are as many myths as there are truths about developing and filling physician executive positions in hospitals and hospital-based systems. In our many years of consulting with organizations about physician executive positions, we've heard them all.

Using the results of our annual physician executive compensation and roles survey and anecdotal experience from our recruiting and consulting activities, this article lists the five most common myths and the facts to debunk them.

The myths addressed in this article are:

  • The physician executive doesn't need to report to the CEO.
  • The best physician executives have advanced management degrees.
  • Clinical specialty is important when you choose a physician executive.
  • Physician executives must see patients to prove they know something about good patient care.
  • Hiring a local candidate never works.
